New Book Release on March 28th
You all know the popular Aminatta Forna. Author of The Memory of Love. Winner of the Commonwealth Writers' Prize Best Book Award 2011, short-listed for the Orange Prize for Fiction 2011, the IMPAC Award 2012, the Warwick Prize 2011 and nominated for the European Prize for Fiction 2013.
Interesting right? However, the novel was somewhat long-winded for my taste, a heavy reading, indeed. I hope I do not give the impression of being frivolous (I read a little bit of everything anyway). Actually, The Memory of Love is an award-winning novel; therefore, it is not a bad book. Only that, in my opinion, it was neither a delightful nor a voracious read; instead, it was long-drawn-out and far from simple.
Well, Aminatta has a new book expected to be released on March 28th 2013, it is called The Hired Man [294 pages] by Bloomsbury Publishing.

The synopsis doesn't give me a lot to think about, so I'll wait for more reviews to decide if it should go on my to-read list.
ReplyDeleteThe funny thing is, I have "The Memory of Love" on my desk right now and I was about to start reading it. Maybe I should start reading it soon so I can get a taste of her work.
Tolu, I will very much like to know your opinion of The Memory of Love. And, I would also love to know afterwards, if you are encouraged to read more of her novels.
DeleteI've given up on "The Memory of Love" at the moment. I'm over 100 pages in, but it's soooooo slow paced and I really don't care enough about the characters. Other people have said it does get more interesting further into it, but I don't have the patience to read for 200 pages before a story gets interesting. I might return to it in future.
DeleteTolu, I am so sorry about that. No matter how further you went into it, still it is sooo slowww paced. I feel you. 200 pages is like reading a whole extremely boring novel.
DeletePlease do return it ASAP. If not you would be long-drawn-out. One of the fact I regretted at the end was that it was not necessary all those pages to tell such a simple and beautiful story.
Sorry about that Tolu. To compensate you could read Changes by Ama Ata Aidoo.
Thanks for this. Didn't know. By the way I'm yet to read Forna.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to reading your thoughts. I think heavy reading won't be a problem for you. I am glad you just discovered she has a new novel to be released.
DeleteGood luck!
Thanks for this, Nana.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved The Memory of Love, though I'm yet to review it. So you can imagine that I've added her new book to my tbr list!
ReplyDeleteKinna, so nice having you here. You can see you are in my blog list already. I am looking forward to reading your reviews on both novels "Memory of Love" and "The Hired Man".
Delete@Tolulope Popoola, I am unable to finish reading The Memory of Love too. She is a good writer as some parts are really romantic but some parts do not connect. I thought I was too hard to please as a reader until I read your comment.

ReplyDeleteHey Anonymous,
DeleteNo worries. The memory of Love is an impenetrable read.
